Toyota ZN8 Naturally Aspirated Boxer-4 Rear-Wheel Drive Torsen Limited-Slip Differential 6-Speed Manual / 6-Speed Automatic Built by Subaru in Gunma, Japan

Overview

The second-generation Toyota GR86, chassis code ZN8, arrived for the 2022 U.S. model year as the successor to the Toyota 86. It kept the lightweight front-engine, rear-wheel-drive formula while adding a larger 2.4-liter naturally aspirated boxer engine, more torque, improved chassis rigidity, and sharper factory tuning. Closely related to the second-generation Subaru BRZ, the GR86 remains one of the few affordable modern sports cars built around low weight, manual transmission availability, and naturally aspirated throttle response.

Design & Engineering Notes

The ZN8 GR86 uses aluminum body panels, a low-mounted boxer engine, compact exterior dimensions, and a rigidened chassis to preserve the lightweight, responsive character of the original 86 while improving power delivery and everyday drivability. The car’s engineering priority is balance rather than outright speed.

Why It Matters

The Toyota GR86 is significant because it preserves a shrinking formula: a lightweight, naturally aspirated, rear-wheel-drive coupe available with a manual transmission at a relatively accessible price. In a market increasingly shaped by heavier turbocharged, hybrid, and electric performance cars, the GR86 remains focused on feedback, balance, and driver involvement.
